Netflix debuts yet another supernatural-thriller series and according to reviews, the streaming giant’s first German-language original series, Dark is similar in many ways with the cult favourite hit series, Stranger Things. Airing its first episode on Dec 1, Dark is a family-mystery thriller following ordinary families that share extraordinary secrets.
The story begins in 2019 when the disappearance of two kids lead to a family saga with a supernatural twist, involving fractured relationships and double lives that lead back to the 1950s and 1980s. Revolving around three generations, the story is set in a small German town and like in Stranger Things, everything goes hay-wire when supernatural mysteries get unveiled.
Similar time zones aren’t just it, both Dark and Stranger Things also share having a government conspiracy behind everything that’s happening in town. While there is the Hawkins Laboratory that performs scientific experiments on humans in Stranger Things, Darks’ supernatural element comprises a large nuclear power plant linked to the disappearance of the children.
When even officials at the nuclear facility are reluctant to help, the dark secret hiding behind the nuclear plant slowly unravels through the episodes and according to the series writer Jantje Friese, “It is like a puzzle and with each episode you get a new piece, and in each episode you realise the fates of the families are tragically connected and they go beyond space and time.”
Dark is among one of Netflix’s 90 European productions that are set to be released in the following years, and will feature 10 episodes. Although filmed in full German-language, English subtitles are available on Netflix. The thriller is said to be a more mature version of Stranger Things, so for those of you who are not over Season 2 of Stranger Things, Dark can be a pretty good alternative.
