Way back in 1982, a science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter featuring a parasitic extraterrestrial being debuted at #8 at the box office, with an opening weekend gross of USD3.1 million (RM9.61 million). It was a big achievement despite having opened alongside another science fiction film, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”, at only two weeks apart.
This year, director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. takes the lead and will be releasing the prequel to “The Thing”. The movie follows a team of Norwegian and American scientists who discover a (you don’t know it yet but you will soon find out) shape shifting alien buried deep in the ice of Antarctica. And really, Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent. What horror could possibly trespass the peace of the perpetual winter wonderland?
After recovering it in a giant frozen block of ice, they then proceed to conduct an experiment (like all foolish, underequipped scientists would) which inadvertently frees the alien. Did they take too long to realize that it’s still alive? Well, yes. All horrors break loose when the extraterrestrial grossly starts consuming and imitating the humans:
Then the hunt is on to burn and torch it to keep it from killing and imitating the team members one at a time. You could say it’s a little bit of a “search and destroy” mission. Except, wrongly torching one or more of the team members in the haste to stop the alien would be classified as murder, right? Oh what are they to do? And who should they trust? No one.
Our take? There are a lot of slimy, gross scenes that will force shut your eyes and a lot of alien shrieking that will make you wince. Something you might not want to watch alone although it’s not going to give you nightmares for nights on end. Go for it. It’s, uh, entertaining,
