[MOVIE REVIEW] Carrie (2013)

I have always loved thriller and horror films because of the gory scenes and the excitement in finding out what’s going to happen next. I’ve been very picky with films especially in the category of horror and thriller because I’ve watched tons of B-grade horror films that just don’t deserve to be on the big screen. But as for ‘Carrie’, it’s definitely one of the best thriller films of 2013.

This movie is based on the book written by Stephen King and redirected by Kimberly Peirce of ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ fame. The two main casts in this movie include Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.

Chloë Grace Moretz plays the role of Carrie White in this movie: a shy and lonely girl who lives with her uber religious mother, Margaret White (Julianne Moore) and slowly discovers her telekinetic powers. Carrie is always neglected at home and is often made fun of by “the popular kids” in her school. She attends her high school prom with a popular lacrosse player and won the title of Prom Queen, but all hell breaks loose when one of the popular kids spills pig blood all over her when she is on stage receiving her crown.

We all know Chloë Grace Moretz from the ‘Kick Ass’ movie series as Hit Girl. But one fact that we may not know is that she has been in more than 30 movies and she is just only 16 years old! Her resume is pretty impressive. I watched the 1976 version of ‘Carrie’ before I went to the theatres to watch this year’s release of ‘Carrie’, and I was impressed with not only the screenplay but how well Chloë acted in it.

Kimberly Peirce as well as the screenwriters Lawrence D. Cohen and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa have created a movie that puts a sympathetic spotlight on Carrie White. In my opinion, the first ‘Carrie’ movie leaned more towards the horror genre, while the new ‘Carrie’ movie is more of a tragedy.

If you have not watch the movie yet, catch it in the theatres near you.
