Makeup Dos and Don’ts for Dark-Skinned Women

Women with light or medium toned skin seem to have an easier time applying make-up since a lot of the products available on the market are generally catered for them. Darker skinned women in Malaysia seem to have a tougher time getting their hands on make-up products built for their beautiful skin, and that always puts these ladies down when it comes to make-up shopping.

There are however, pros to having dark skin – you can get away with much darker and bolder colors and don’t have to worry about applying too much blush or wearing dark or even bright colored eye shadows.

If you still haven’t quite figured out how to rock make-up on your skin, here are some helpful tips that can get you started!

DO’S

1. Contour, Contour, Contour
Foundation shouldn’t just be the only thing you rely on when it comes to your skin. Foundation alone – although it can give you a flawless complexion – can make your features look “flat”. A little contouring with a bronzer and highlighter, and perhaps a variety of shades of foundation can help you sculpt your features more. When looking for a blusher, look for brown and copper undertones.

2. Wear Dark Blush
Dark-skinned women can get away with skipping out on blush, but a little dust of blush can highlight the apples of your cheeks and leave you with a fresh flush! Coral, deep orange and wine tones are perfect on dark complexions, but we recommend using a cream blush because it’s easier to control the intensity.

3. Have Fun with Eye Make-up
Although nude make-up can sculpt your features, we love seeing bold eye make-up on dark-skinned women! Whether it’s a bright hot pink on your eyes or a electric blue, you know it brings out your fun side! Just remember to keep your lips and cheeks a bit muted.

4. Make Use of Shimmery Eye Shadows
Shimmery eye shadow look amazing against dark skin. Gold and purple are especially beautiful and can add a goddess-like touch. Don’t forget to use brown or black eyeliner to accentuate your eyes. Sleek Make-Up are known for their eyeshadow palettes that cater to dark-skinned women. Buy them here at Luxola.

DON’TS

1. Don’t Wear Pale Frosty Lip Colors
Though pale bubblegum pink and lilac can look a little fun (like Nikki Minaj), these colors can wash out your gorgeous dark complexion. Bolder colors like hot pink, violet, burgundy, oxblood, red are perfect on darker skin tones. If you love nude shades, opt for earthy tones and neutral shades. MAC Siss, a yellow-toned beige, and MAC Touch, a browned nude are the perfect nudes for dark-skinned women.

2. Don’t Skimp on Powder
If you have oily skin, it’s important to use a powder. Translucent powder is perfect for kicking out the shine without making your skin look too cakey.

3. Don’t Use Foundation That Doesn’t Match
Finding foundation is extremely tough for women with dark skin. This is where we recommend taking a walk down to a professional make-up store, and with the help of a make-up artist, work around getting the right foundation for you. We all know it’s not pretty when your face is brighter than the tone of your neck or chest. So here’s one trick we’ve picked up – match your foundation according to the skin tone on your chest or neck. That way when you apply your foundation, the different shades in colour aren’t that stark!

4. Don’t Forget to Sculpt Your Brows
No matter what your make-up look is – nude or bold, it’s so important to get your eyebrows shaped and groomed properly. It goes such a long way to make you look awake and highlight your eyes.

5. Don’t Skip Concealer
Although dark circles aren’t noticeable on women with dark skin, it helps to apply a little bit of concealer to brighten the eye area.
