Lorde Apologises For Comparing Her Friendship With Taylor Swift To “An Autoimmune Disease”

Lorde is feeling the heat for comparing her friendship with squad member Taylor Swift to an “autoimmune disease” in an interview with The Guardian on Saturday.

Speaking on the difficulty of maintaining a close friendship with someone as famous as Taylor, Lorde told The Guardian, “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do.”

“There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship,” Lorde continued. “It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.” Lorde apologised on Twitter after a fan mentioned how Selena Gomez (fellow squad member who suffers from lupus) might feel about the comment.

The two stars are close friends, with Taylor throwing Lorde a 20th star-studded birthday party in November. “Had the best birthday party I’ve ever had tonight surrounded by my nyc family. all organised by tay who is as she says ‘a mom with no kids’. i am ur kid and u love me so hard i could burst. here’s to our 3 magic years of best friendship and more moments like this squished between angels,” the singer wrote in an Instagram photo.

Lorde also explained to The Guardian why celebrities tend to befriend each other. Her statements aren’t directly about Swift, the article also mentions her friendships with Lena Dunham, Florence Welch, and Tavi Gevinson. But the singer does shed a bit of light onto why celebrities seem to have “squads.”

“It’s an element of wanting to stick together. Because it can be so scary to do this,” Lorde told The Guardian. “These friendships, they’re about having a hand put on your shoulder by someone who knows. They’re about hearing, ‘I’ve done it, too.'”
