More than 18 months after Beyonce sensationally hinted at Jay-Z’s cheating ways with her explosive #Lemonade album, now, he has finally explained why he did it.
In an interview, the rapper opened up about the superstar couple’s past marriage struggles, revealing that seeing a therapist had helped them avoid the taboo ‘D’ word — divorce.
The New York native went into detail about how he shut down his emotions, “You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens? You shut down all emotions. So, even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can’t connect.”
He continued, “In my case, like, it’s deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity.”
The rapper — who publicly responded to Lemonade with his own deeply personal album 4:44 earlier this year — explained that both he and Beyonce had used their art like a therapy session. “The best place is right in the middle of the pain,” the Grammy-winner said. “And that’s where we were sitting. And it was uncomfortable, and we had a lot of conversations.”
“I was really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another’s craft. I think she’s amazing.”
Jay Z even hinted that they could have divorced. “You know, most people walk away, and, like, divorce rate is like 50 percent or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves.”
He added that it was incredibly difficult to see how much Beyonce was hurting, “The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.”
In the same interview, Jay-Z also opened up about his tumultuous relationship and alleged feud with Kanye West, revealing that he was upset when ‘Ye brought his family into their drama.
“You got hurt, because this guy was talking about you on a stage,” Jay-Z said referencing Kanye West’s infamous concert rant last year. “But what really hurt me, you can’t bring my kid or my wife into it. We’ve gotten past bigger issues, but you brought my family into it, now it’s a problem with me.”
“I talked to Kanye the other day, just to tell him, like, he’s my brother. I love Kanye. I do. It’s a complicated relationship with us.”
Jay-Z also disclosed that, “In the long run, you know, hopefully when we’re 89 we look at this six months or whatever time and we laugh at that.”
