Jason Mraz’s Story of Fame & Fortune

Jason Mraz, an artist who is known for his soul touching lyrics performed last night at Stadium Merdeka. Our hearts just melted when we managed to interview Jason yesterday.

Love is a four letter word; his latest album was released on April 17th and if there were four words which we could use to describe him, it would certainly be generous, humble, caring and loving.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

“Being miserable and bored. Anytime I get bored, I turn to music, collage painting and stuff. I open myself and suddenly I am surprised by a melody, word or an idea and I start from there. Rather than being depressed, I jump into music and try to understand what that feeling is.”

In terms of friendship, how do you differentiate the real friends from those who wants to be your friend because you’re famous?

“You can actually tell the difference between fake friends and real friends. I have friends all over the world, but very few close friends. My close friends reminds me of who I am and won’t let me live in some high up world. Fake friends worship me like I am some God.”

What made you start up the Jason Mraz foundation?

“When I was first starting my career, my friends and family gave me a rich quality of life. Now I have got this opportunity to set up a bank account that I can use to help people and it’s really cool. It is all about being able to make sense of fame and fortune. There is only so much one really needs especially a guy like me. I found my purpose.”

The Jason Mraz foundation was established to sustain various organizations which fights for human equality, arts and education, environment preservation and for recovery and assistance purposes.

Are your songs still about empowerment?

“Yes it is all about letting yourself be who you are. Do not think about the past, worry about what anyone has said about you before and do not fear about the future as it isn’t here yet. People use my music to connect to others. Before it was all about just sounding pretty but over the years I have added humour, depth and meaning which audiences can relate to.”

Isn’t it amazing to find an artist who is so down to earth like Jason? You can help too by contributing to Jason’s foundation. All you would need to do is to purchase his album – Love is a four letter word and for every album which is sold, RM3 would be donated to a local charity home.
