Is It Safe to Have Sex While Being Pregnant?

It’s a no-brainer. Most men are afraid that they’d hurt the baby during sex while you’re pregnant, according to a study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy.

Researchers gathered 105 men between the ages of 20 and 46 with partners who were about 38 weeks pregnant on average to investigate whether sex changes as a result of the pregnancy. Most of these couples had less sex while the woman was pregnant, but it was not because it was bad as more than half of these men stated that they were very satisfied with the sex and overall relationship.

On the other hand, the results show that 81 percent of these men think that intercourse might harm the foetus. Among other reasons stated were that they didn’t want to induce early labour or that their partner wasn’t in the mood.

Well, this fear seems pretty legitimate, but Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at Yale University School of Medicine, says that sex during any trimester is safe provided that you are not suffering from any complications.

“Intercourse is generally safe during pregnancy as long as it’s comfortable for the mom,” says Kiarra King, M.D., a Chicago-based ob-gyn. This means that you should avoid positions that require you to lie on your back, which may lead the uterus to press against the vena cava and reduce blood flow from the lower body to the heart. Side-by-side positions would take the pressure away from major body parts.

Additionally, it doesn’t matter if the man is well endowed as the cervix blocks access to the foetus till roughly the final month of pregnancy. The amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby will act as a cushion, even if there is deeper penetration, says Minkin.

Sometimes, your doctor may even encourage sex. While sex can induce labour, it’s only likely to occur if a woman is past her due date.

If you’re pregnant, you can now assure your guy that’s totally safe to get steamy in bed!
