International Women’s Day is here and we’re so excited to be celebrating women, our achievements and everything we represent. And if it weren’t for women, none of us would even be here.

This year marks the 102nd anniversary of that celebrates the economic, political and social contributions of women in society, and we’ve got a little something special to share with our readers. To honor the women out there, we spoke various Malaysians from all over to share with us who the most influential women are in their lives, and why they chose these women.

“I admire my mom. She taught me how to argue. She also taught me to hate ignorance in myself and other people. I am a better person because of her. There was a time when she wished I would pray more. It is tough to convey to her that I think of my whole life as a kind of prayer. By living, one prays. She doesn’t know it, but she taught me that too.”
Han See, Editor at Bluetoffee Books

“Most influential woman: my mother. She taught me kindness and honesty above all else”.
Daphne, 29, Teacher

“My mom for teaching me that the only thing in life worth living for is passion, and her philosophy is reflected in her day-to-day life; it took her 30 years to find her true passion and she never gave up. A daughter couldn’t ask for a more dedicated role model”.
Vanessa Palencia, 25, Subeditor

“A woman I admire would have to be my mother. A single mother, she divorced at age 38 and went to Singapore to work, not knowing anything. What I really admire about her is how she took a newspaper cutting and went for her first interview at age 38”.

“There are 2 most influential people in my life. One of course, is my mom cause she toughened me up to take whatever life throws at me and taught me that if you can accept the good things in life, you should be able to accept the bad things in life as well. The 2nd person is my bestie Cynthia Ling. We were freinds since  high school and she always taught me about how important is ones self worth. She gave me a lot of inspiration to work harder at my craft no matter how different our craft maybe from each other and that we whould never ever let anyone tell us that we don’t deserve what we really really want”.
Max Paujik, Senior Executive at NSTP (M) Bhd

“My grandmother is the most influential woman to me because she is persistent and strong. Despite the fact she is turning 70 next year, she still walks and talks like my aunt, her daughter. She taught me to be independent because after she gave birth to 3 sons (including my dad) and one pair of twins sisters, my grandfather actually left her alone and found another woman. Raising one kid is not easy but with her own hands, she brought up 5 of them and this is pretty amazing to me. Everyone has his or her ups and downs, but not everyone is patient and strong enough to find a way to get through them. My grandmother did it and we are now having such a big, blessed family”.
Anderson, 20, UTP Student

“Oprah Winfrey. I saw an article before she is top 10 of the most influential people..hmm maybe it’s because of her gift of tongue, her wisdom, or maybe her own past and now she is so well-known after going through all those things. I think it’s impressive after what she went through, she still can stand up, become a role model and inspiration for others”.
Nicole, 20, Student

“My mom. I learned everything from her since I was born. When I face problems I will go to her. Her words influence me a lot”.
Hoiyu Chan, 19, KDU College Student

“My mom. Because she brought me up,and gave me what I needed, she gave me freedom for doing things that I like, she understands me. I love her”.
Stephanie Lim, 19, KDU College Student

“The woman that influences me the most is my mom. She went through a lot as a young mother of two, just to keep her children happy. She’s sacrificed so much for my brother and I, and it’s something that I will always treasure”.
Emily, 25, Executive Manager
