India Debates Ban on Pornography Due to Rising Number of Rape Cases

Indian authorities are debating on a ban on pornography as the country copes with a rising of incidents of sexual violence. The ban on pornography has been sought by a petition in the country’s supreme court, but is winning support from women activists.

Kamlesh Vaswani, a lawyer based in the city of Indore felt there’s a direct connection between sexual assault and looking at pornographic videos.

“They corrupt the people. They corrupt the mind. Indian kids are accessing more graphic and brutal videos”, Vaswani explained. The further prove his argument, Vaswani brought up reports that the suspect arrested for raping a five-year-old girl in New Delhi told police that he watch porn clips on a mobile phone before the crime took place.

Vaswani expressed that the existing laws are not practicing the society from pornography enough in a petition to the Supreme Court. Distributing pornographic material is illegal in India, however watching it isn’t.

The petition highlights the reports of violent sex crimes targeting women and children are hitting headlines and igniting street protest. Although the laws have been tightened since the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student in New Delhi, police figures show that the number of rape cases have increased in the city, Another horrific fact is that children are also being the targeted and the numbers are increasing too.

Many are blaming this brutal trend on online pornography. Even though less than 10% of Indians have computers connected to the internet, more Indians are able to access Internet videos through their smartphone devices. The proportion of searches on Google for pornographic material has increased fivefold in the last decade.

In our opinion, pornography can be a cause of the increasing number of rape cases in India, however banning pornography might not really put an end to it. The male society should understand that everyone has rights and that equality and respect should never be neglected.
