You may think that bargain shopping is only for the financially/economically challenged. But believe it or not, even wealthy people love a good bargain. However, a “good buy” to them might largely differ from those from a smaller income bracket. Either way, the idea of “bargain shopping” or “sales” applies the same across everyone.
A shopper is a shopper and shoppers love good discounts because of the instant emotional and psychological gratification it gives (plus a not-that-much-lighter purse too). Yet, shoppers (whether wealthy or otherwise) tend to fall into a trap when they can’t tell the difference between a great deal and a bogus sale.
Here are some things you would need to look out for:
1. Damaged goods. Yes, we know the price is cheap but you can’t always expect a perfect product from a store that has giant “Bargain!” or “Sale!” banners pasted all across its front. Some items could be moderately damaged or used (read: from multiple “try on”s or fittings). Always check for missing details (beads, sequins, embroidery), buttons, tears, or holes.
2. Style over fashion. Sure, that wraparound Grecian dress with an alluring asymmetrical hem that looks wonderful is not exactly your style but it’s going for just a little under RM100. Really, is it comfortable though? How often are you going to wear it and more importantly, where are you going to wear it to? And we’re sorry, but “the back of your wardrobe” is not a venue for a dress like that.
3. Want or need. Just before you take those three boxes of heels to the counter to pay for them, ask yourself, “do I already have similar pairs of these at home?” or “do I need so many shoes?”. Don’t be swayed by the whole idea of it being a sale. Remind yourself constantly in order to lessen purchase duplicates and help yourself save more in buying unnecessary things (read: financial management).
It’s also good to leave the plastic at home and carry a limited amount of cash with you. That, my friend, is a sure way to spend within your means. May we also add that if there’s a great mall-wide sale, then don’t just settle for one stop. Drop in, pick and search, mark the item (mentally), then slip out, and look at other stores for comparisons.
