How to Enjoy Alcohol on a Diet

Many people do not realize that alcohol can actually cause weight gain. For example, the number of calories in spirits can be roughly based on it’s ‘proof’. Most mainstream spirits are 80-proof and contain about 97 calories per single 1.5 oz serving. That’s before you even add mixers! You may have heard that it’s crucial to cut down on alcohol when you’re on a diet, but there’s still a way to party the night with your friends without having to worry how much you’re going to gain over the night.

Here are some ways to help you enjoy your alcohol on a diet:

Order smart
Low-calorie drinks involve white liquors and wine. Cocktails are often pretty rich in sugar; have you seen a mojito being made? If you’re planning to have a mixed drink, make sure to choose a relatively low calorie mixer – tonic with a slice of lemon instead of sprite for example.

Avoid cocktail mixers
Cocktail mixers contain high amounts of sugar, and not to mention flavoring too. As little as 4oz of a daiquiri or margarita mix already contains up to 7 teaspoons of sugar! Calories from mixers are the worst kinds – they’re made of simple and refined sugars .

Make your own mixers
Margaritas are one of the most refreshing and simplest cocktails to make. But instead of using a lime cordial, make your own real lime juice and a combination of calorie-free club soda! Mixers, after all can be pricey, but you’ll get a good smack of flavor using natural ingredients

Drink moderately
Did you know that drinking can lead to overeating? Also, while we could say that it’s a good idea to stay away from alcohol, just be extremely wise about the amount that you drink. After all, alcohol is a product of fermented carbohydrates and so calories can’t be avoided. A glass or two can help you tolerate the new lifestyle you’re on, but remember to never go overboard.
