Getting your dose of protein can be a serious challenge, especially when you’re a vegetarian or vegan. But even so, cutting down on poultry can be a good thing; it lowers your intake of cholesterol and saturated fats, which decreases your risk of heart disease.

As poultry and red meat are the best sources of protein, how does one get their healthy dose of protein without any meat? Here are some high-protein foods that are not meat.

 Soy
Soybeans has just enough protein that is comparable in quality with animal proteins. Consuming soy products like tofu, tempeh, and drinking soy milk gives the right amount of energy without have to worry about meat. However, it is high in estrogen that can trigger weight gain, so consume moderately.

 Quinoa
If you hope to cut down on rice, quinoa is the best grain to go for as it’s  gluten-free, high in protein and contains essential amino acids. Replace your rice with it and it’s more hearty with stews, salads and other dishes. Just boil your quinoa with stock for extra flavor.

Greek Yogurt
Unlike regular yogurt, Greek yogurt is strained to have the whey removed, giving it thicker consistency. Greek yogurt is traditionally high in protein and is a great choice if you need to meet your daily protein requirement. Just make a parfait with fruits, cereal and honey, and you’re good to go!
