Gorging on the love for chocolate

When it comes to indulgences, we’re all for it! Well, obviously. Much more so if the indulgences come in the form of chocolates. But you know what they say – chocolates are fattening. We say, too much of anything is bad for you anyway so why hold back from enjoying a little bit of something you love?

As a matter of fact, a little chunk off that Cadbury bar could be good for you once in a while. And we’re not just assuming it! According to recent studies that were published in the British Medical Journal, eating 100g of dark chocolate per day could reduce blood pressure by an average of 5.1/1.8mmHg. This means it’s enough to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke by a whopping 21%!

Chocolate also contains large quantities of antioxidants (chemicals that help neutralize harmful chemical reactions in our system). Scientists have found that just 40g of chocolate contains the same type of antioxidants that give red wine its heart-protecting reputation. And if you’re a fan of dark chocolate, then we’ll have you know that there are as many antioxidants present in dark chocolate as there are in a cup of green tea.

And who can forget the sheer “feel good” factor that one can gain from consuming chocolate? It has been scientifically proven that eating chocolate increase brain levels of several chemicals, including mood-altering PEA (phenylethylamine, related to amphetamine). What it does is that it produces a mild, confidence-instilling buzz.

(Side note: Harry Potter fans would probably remember how chocolate served as a powerful and excellent antidote for the chilling, cold effect produced by contact with Dementors.)

So, who can blame the yummylicious, luscious appeal of chocolate? Stop whatever you’re doing right now (especially if you’re stressed), and go get some to melt in your mouth, guilt-free. Euphoria!
