Getting your “scent sense” right

Have you ever walked in a mall minding your own business when all of a sudden the most unassuming woman walks pass you and you can’t help but stop in your tracks because she smells like, magic? While deodorant is a necessary evil to keep your underarms dry and nice smelling throughout the day, perfume blends with your natural scent to create a smell that is distinctively yours. Of course, you need to pick a perfume which is right for you in the first place.

Perfumes are categorized based on their oil and alcohol content.

Here’s a quick lesson: the base of any perfume is the oil which holds the scent which is then dissolved in alcohol to enable the scent to be released into the skin.

Eau de Toilette has the lowest amount of oil to alcohol followed by Eau De Cologne which has more oil and finally, Eau de Parfum which has the strongest scent and lasts the longest.

Composition

Every perfume contains three scents which are not present at the same time. The first is the lightest and you can smell in right away after spraying but only lasts for minutes. The second scent appears as soon as the first vanishes and lasts for up to an hour while the final scent develops after an hour and remains for most of the day.

If your perfume doesn’t seem to last long note that it really depends on your skins type. For example, scents last longer on oily skin compared to dry skin.

Picking the right perfume

Those little scent cards that the sales girl hands to you is not necessarily how it will smell on your skin. Get them to spray a little on your wrist, smell it. Excuse yourself to walk around the mall for abit and resmell your wrist in an hour and that’s the scent that will stay on you. If you like what you smell, then this might be the one!

Spray in moderation

I hate taking the train for two reasons: people with BO and people who drench themselves in perfume. Never overdo with your perfume because the only way you’re going to rid the overwhelming fragrance even partially would be to take a shower and that’s not an option if you happen to be in a rush.

Don’t mix different perfumes together either because each perfume is carefully concocted to bring out the best smells. One or two sprays are enough. If you want a strong scent, spray directly onto your wrists or chest otherwise a fool proof method would be to spray into the air and walk into it.

Make it last

Perfumes start to lose its crispness six months down the road after opening so if you want them to last longer, keep them away from light and heat especially if your table lamp is on your dressing table. You might save money by purchasing a bigger bottle of perfume but if you can’t finish it within a year then you may have to compromise on quality.

It may sound like a great idea to get someone perfume as a gift but perfume, like skincare, is a personal choice and just because it smells good on you, it may not on someone else. Perhaps you could get them a redeemable voucher so that they pick out a product that fits them perfectly!
