With less than 120 days until summer, we thought we’d bring this bizarre swimwear craze to your attention.

Behold, the Facekini, also known as a bikini for your face or as many others describe it, “China’s most terrifying swimwear trend”.

No, this isn’t Halloween or some colourful heist— it’s a growing movement in China.

The face mask which resembles the typical burglar cover-up make a terrifying sight at the beach, but these women are absolutely loving the trend.

Apparently, most Chinese women would just hang around by the beach and avoid going swimming to maintain their skin complexion.

However, those who does go into the water, will wear these face masks known as the facekini.

Unlike in the US, where less is more and tanner is better, Chinese women flock to their beach shores covered in fabric from head to toe, because in China, the colour of your skin can represent socio-economic status.

Whiter skin is considered to represent wealth and beauty.

The Facekini was invented by a former accountant Zhang Shifan in the early 2000s, and more than 30,000 have been sold in the last year. They may be a little alarming at first, but the popular swimwear accessory offers full-face protection from the sun and jellyfish stings.

What a win.

While the trend is mainly concentrated in China, they are available to buy online via Facekini. Just make sure you take it off before you head to the shops.
