In recent years, fashion trends and styles have gotten bigger and bolder, with layering, mesh see-through or fishnet overalls being the ‘in’ style. Undergarments such as bras, bralettes and sports bras have been a central piece for any ensemble style of modern fashion.

According to analysis done by Pour Moi UK, a lingerie brand with the analytics of Google trends and sales data, the type of bra, colour, and material could influence the urge to purchase a new bra for comfort or daily wear.

Popular bra styles, colour and materials

Backless bra searches have spiked, with a 91% rise over last year. Bra tops, plunge bras, and halterneck bras also made the top five, implying that individuals are shopping for new undergarments for nights out when they resume socialising. Pour Moi has also reported a 61% increase in sales of push-up bras over the past year.

With working from home a new normal way of living, it’s no surprise that bralettes, which are generally non-padded and non-underwired, are the second most popular bra style, with a 67% increase in searches. As we anticipate the next season of Bridgerton to hit our screens, it seems that the hit series has influenced various undergarment trends, with searches for corset bras up 28% year over year and balconette bras up 21% year over year.

A table of search percentages of bra styles is provided below:

Colours are also a factor that could influence a shopper to purchase the type of bras they are interested in, and according to the data, tonal colours are the most popular in 2022, with brown and blush bras witnessing a 60% increase in searches from the previous year. In addition to the Y2K trend sweeping TikTok, bright colours like lilac and fuchsia appear to be in high demand this year as well, with both showing a 51% increase year over year.

Green has had a moment in recent months, with the iconic Bottega green fascinating fashionistas online, and the hue appearing on everything from dresses to accessories. Lime, green, and khaki all made the top 10 trending colours of the year, indicating that green is here to stay.

The third and last factor that influences the purchase of a new bra is the material the bra is made of. Surprisingly, the most popular bra material was knits, which experienced a 49% spike in searches, followed by wool, which saw a 38% increase. This is probably due to several recent fashion trends in which comfort and style have merged, such as the knitted bra seen on celebrities like Katie Holmes, which has sparked attention. Working from home has also influenced consumers to choose softer, cozier bra fabrics.

In 3rd place among the most-searched bra materials is the classic lace bra, with a 25% increase in searches – likely influenced by the 2nd season of the Netflix series Emily in Paris. Following in 4th place are Diamante bras, with a 17% increase in searches. Figures like Kourtney Kardashian, over the holiday season, flaunted their glittery bras combined with shiny shorts on Instagram.
