Director of the Cincinnati Zoo Explains Why They Shot Harambe

We have all read about poor Harambe [the gorilla] who had to be shot dead in order to rescue a four-year-old boy that fell into the enclosure. Social media users are outraged at the zoo’s decision to shoot the gorilla, many of them claiming that they could have used a tranquilliser instead.

Zoo director Thane Maynard refused that notion, saying that tranquillisers usually take some time to work, and would not have caused Harambe to immediately pass out. In fact, it could agitate the gorilla and make him more aggressive.

Maynard also rejected the idea that Harambe was protecting the child, as many social media users observed.  “The child was being dragged around,” Maynard told reporters. “His head was banging on concrete. This was not a gentle thing. The child was at risk.”

Maynard went on to highlight that this was the first animal killing in the zoo’s history. He also backed up his team, saying they made a “tough” but the “right choice”.

“It’s a big loss to the Cincinnati zoo. Harambe was one of our most magnificent animals, he’s a critically endangered species.” he added.

While we’re on the topic, check out Philip DeFranco’s spot-on rebuttal to the mother:

We’re sorry, Harambe, hope you’re in a better place.
