Are Underwire Bras Bad For Your Breasts?

It’s a common myth. We’ve all heard wearing bras can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. But does it hold any health problems?

The bra, in our case, is really a woman’s breast (sorry, best) friend. It’s an important support device that not only gives you the lift, but can also complement the way you look, giving you a surge of confidence. After all, when you know your assets look good, you feel good.

The underwire bra in particular offers more support and they make your bosoms appear more attractive. They’re so popular these days you can hardly find one without a wire. And when you do, it doesn’t do as much magic as an underwire would. But the underwire bra is under a lot of heat nowadays for being bad for breasts.

Some believe that women who wore tight-fitting bras all the time was at risk of developing breast cancer as a tight bra can inhibit lymphatic drainage. Apparently, tight bras can trap toxins in the breast tissue, and as they clog and manifest, they cause cancer. Fortunately, that theory is not supported by sufficient evidence, there is quite a bit of logic in there too. [Source]

One of the most common problems that women have with underwire bras come from direct contact with the metal of the underwire, but this is common when the bra is old and workout, or if the metal underwire breaks and pokes through the cloth. But even so, can it really cause “cancer” or a deadly disease? Unless if the metal rusts and comes in contact with your skin, you end up with a skin infection at most. So, your bra won’t really leave you with a major disease, but that doesn’t mean it’s risk-free either.

Breast cancers are commonly linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. It is hereditary and you can reduce your risks if it’s detected and treated early. Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of getting breast cancer. [Source]

If bras were the reason behind us getting breast cancer, wouldn’t we have heard about it already? After all, we’ve all worn bras for the last few centuries! Pesticides, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, fertility drugs and deodorant are most likely some of the factors that could cause breast cancer. But bras are probably not one of them.
