AirAsia’s new in-flight Wi-Fi service is now ready for passengers!

At present, this service is only available on four of its planes, but AirAsia Bhd mentions that 20 of its planes would be equipped with the service by year-end.

By the second quarter of 2015, AirAsia is looking to have the Wi-Fi service installed on all of its 80 planes.

Don’t be too happy though! The Wi-Fi service, called roKKi Chats, only allows passengers to use certain instant messaging apps such as Line, WhatsApp and WeChat while on-board. This means that you cannot surf the Internet or upload photos of the skyline on Instagram, sadly.

With its ability to support up to 90 passengers at one time, the service will go live once the plane reaches 10,000 feet above sea level, but it will be deactivated once the plane goes through restricted airspace of India, China and Macau. roKKi Chats is able to deliver a maximum speed of 1.33Mbps, although the speed will be reduced to 10Kbps once users hit the service’s 3MB data quota.

So, how does it work? Passengers first need to purchase a roKKi Chats token from a flight attendant which is priced at RM8 before they can use the service. However, for a limited time only, the roKKi Chats is being sold at a promotional price of RM5.

The tokens are sold on a first-come first-serve basis on each flight and it is compatible on most tablets as well as smartphones. Each token is applicable for ONE device only.

So far, there isn’t any word on the service being available on AirAsia X flights.
