Here at Lipstiq, we love empowering women and inspiring stories. So, imagine our amazement when we heard of a woman in Mumbai who not only attacked her attacker, but she also made it her sole mission to drag his sorry a** to the police station.
Anywhere in the world, if someone, especially a woman was being assaulted you would think that people would stop whatever it is that they are doing and help. But evidently, that is not the case especially during the recent assault case that happened in India.
One afternoon, Pradnya Mandhare was waiting for the train and what she least expected to happen was for a drunk male to come up to her and begin groping.
The 20-year-old was shocked at first because this man has the nerve and was brazen enough to grope her in front of dozens of people in broad daylight. But she was even more shocked when she realised that the onlookers didn’t bother helping.
According to Mandhare,
I [tried] to get away from him, but he grabbed me… The only thing to do, because nobody else was doing anything, was to hit him, and so I belted him with my bag.
The attacker tried to hit her back but of course, was too drunk to do so and instead of running away, Mandhare said,
I was determined not to let him get away. I know that women don’t like to complain to the police, but I was determined to make sure he was punished. Most women are scared of approaching the police as filing a complaint is a lengthy process…
She wanted to make sure he was punished so Mandhare pulled the man by his hair and dragged his sorry self to a nearby police station. Police was able to identify him and 25-year-old Chavan Chowdee was arrested.
Of course, it’s important to highlight that in India, the police aren’t always very helpful and they’re quite well known for that.
It involves giving a lot of statements and sometimes dealing with uncooperative officers.Every woman should fight back in such cases and they should not keep quiet… Women are not objects for anyone to touch at will.
