Women are perpetually at risk of dealing very damaging blows every day because of the way we are built. Some are heard, felt and seen (e.g. snatch theft, rape, etc), while others go unnoticed. There are several crimes that can deal hard slaps to your self-esteem and create unnecessary insecurities. One of them is the unspeakable act of “Peeping Toms”.
The invasion of your privacy and physical violation has quite a low risk of happening in your own home but when you’re in public, the risk heightens to a whole new level. This crime is a sexual crime (usually committed by perverts) where non-consenting adults and sometimes even children, are filmed or have their pictures taken explicitly for the purpose of manipulation. Sexual manipulation, at that.
In many cases, most of these “materials” are well-kept secrets but who knows if the “private collection” is shown to people for the purpose of bragging rights? And if you’re unlucky, the videos or photos, or both, might get released via e-mail, Internet websites, or worse, social media. At which point it will spread like wildfire (read: never-ending nightmare).
Having said that, there are some things you can do to protect yourself from these predators:
1. Often, busy places like a shopping mall, fairs, outdoor concerts, and festivals are perfect “hunting grounds” for these perverts. It is where you would most likely be videotaped or photographed up-skirt if you’re wearing a skirt or a dress. Be aware of the people around you. Up-skirt voyeur videos or pictures will require the person to walk closely or stand closely behind you. Move away from them immediately.
2. Hidden cameras (especially those that were hidden in washrooms, locker rooms, or changing rooms) are not an uncommon topic to our local and international news’ headlines. Perverts can easily get their hands of those little gadgets and misuse them because they don’t require any licensing for purchase. Always check for evidence of video cameras (e.g. suspicious “pin holes” in the wall, any items that seem to be directly pointed toward a certain area, any items that seem out of place).
3. When you’re in an unfamiliar place (e.g. new rented home or hotel room), you might want to take a good look around. There are ways to scan the area for hidden cameras (with an RF Signal Detector) before signing that lease or spending the night. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of thoroughly scanning the room with a detector, then look out for “strange” things. Hidden cameras also come in a variety of disguises so look out for the odd household item or oddly placed piece of deco.
