How To: Layer it right

A year later, the “layered look” is still wildly popular but there are ways that it could go wrong. For one thing, we live in a tropical climate so from a fashion standpoint, pulling off the warm autumn and winter looks can mean that we toast inside our attire. Also, if you’re a naturally curvy woman, you might end up looking chunkier than usual.

Models are usually super thin so layering generally looks good, “weightless”, and effortlessly beautiful on them. Don’t have the Victoria’s Secret Angels’ body? Here are many ways to layer clothing to make your outfit different too without looking frumpy:

1. Avoid using too many layers. If you want a clean look, go for items like a cardigan or a thin blazer over a fitted top. Experiment with different necklines (e.g. v-neck over a scooped neckline), sleeve lengths (e.g. a sleeveless top as a vest), or lower hemlines (e.g. a short top over a long top).

2. Choose neutral colours because not only they’re easy to match, they also have low saturation and therefore, are easy on the eyes. Also, they tend to not draw attention to your problem areas. Bring harmony to your “layered look” with soft colours.

3. To refrain from the mistake of looking a bit much, stick to just enhancing your layered look (e.g. donning a sequined cardigan or blazer over a tight tee). Drop the accessories. Your look only needs one focus.

4. Layer just the lower part of your body. Wear tights under a skirt or high-ish boots over your skinny jeans. Again, stick to neutral colours and try not to draw too much attention to your bottom half, especially if that’s a problem area for you.

You may also mix different textures (e.g. sheer over solid) and patterns but be careful with what you choose to layer your clothes with. And lastly, have fun! Layering means you can opt to remove and rearrange at any given time if it gets too hot or cold, or if you just want to experiment with your look a little bit further.
