The reality of group discount sites: save or splurge?

Group discount websites are a dime a dozen and chances are you’re on the mailing list of at least two sites if you’re the tech savvy consumer looking for the occasional good deal. To date, there are over 50 group discount websites in Malaysia but among those that offer a good and constant variety of deals are Groupsmore, ilovediscounts, Dealmates, MyDeal, MilkADeal and JackCow.

Here you can get discounts up to 90% off services and products from spa treatments, mani-pedicures, a brand new iPad case to gorgeously printed Photobooks. The problem with a good deal is that there can never be one too many. A good discount is akin to a sale which encourages the buy now think later mentality. While its a great way to experience new things you’ve never expected to try, it can also hurt your bank account while you’re at it.

Here are some tips to keep prevent overspending on these irresistible goodies:

Think and Rethink
The good thing about these deals is that if you miss one, chances are a similar one will reappear again in a few weeks time. Take time to read the fine print. Check if its valid for one or two persons and the deadline of the deal. Some deals have very short expiration dates so check your schedule carefully before purchasing a deal.

Set A Limit
How many deals do you purchase in a month? Some people actually purchased up to 30 deals in a single month thinking that they’ll be doing themselves a favour and “saving” a lot of money but no matter what, its still money out which you could be using for other things. Set a limit on how much you will allow yourself to spend on coupons to prevent yourself from buying too many.

Use It or Gift It
Keep track of all the deals you’ve purchased, print out the certificates and make appointments to get them used. If you realize that you won’t be able to make use of them, consider selling them off or giving them to a friend. Make sure you use your coupons up before you consider buying new ones.

Subscribe to More Than One Site
Akin to window shopping, subscribe to more than one discount site so that you make sure you’re getting the best deal there is. Also once you realize how many offers there are of the same item or service, you’ll probably get bored of it after awhile.
