Spotify Reveals Our Nation’s Guiltiest Music Choices

Thanks to the leading streaming service, Spotify, listening to music has been made a lot easier and legal too! Spotify allows you to search for just about any songs and you can customize playlists to your liking as well.

Now, let’s face it, it’s not just the current chart-toppers that we listen to on Spotify. I’m sure I don’t only speak for myself when I say that there are playlists on my Spotify account that include some of the best oldies. Just recently, Spotify revealed Malaysia’s guiltiest pleasure is the one hit wonder “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry. Second was Phil Collins’ Sussudio and followed closely by one of the 90s favourites, “All That She Wants” by Swedish pop Group Ace of Base

Spotify analysed some 120,000 playlists called “Guilty Pleasures” and discovered the top 10 most streamed tracks, which evidently the nation would rather keep on the down low!

Malaysia’s Guiltiest Pleasures
1. Save Tonight – Eagle-Eye Cherry
2. Sussudio – Phil Collins
3. All That She Wants – Ace of Base
4. I Believe In A Thing Called Love – The Darkness
5. Bad Day – Daniel Powter
6. Tubthumping – Chumbawamba
7. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
8. Nasty Girl (Main) – Nitty
9. You Get What You Give – New Radicals
10. Kung Fu Fighting – Carl Douglas

Some other songs that featured more frequently when Spotify was analysing “Guilty Pleasure” playlists were One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”, Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe”, and they even saw some Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys’ songs making an appearance.

Women’s Guiltiest Pleasures – Global
1. What Makes You Beautiful – One Direction
2. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
3. I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys
4. Wannabe – Spice Girls
5. Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus

Men’s Guiltiest Pleasures – Global
1. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
2. I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys
3. Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey
4. Toxic – Britney Spears
5. Wannabe – Spice Girls

Sunita Kaur, Managing Director at Spotify Asia says: “We’re often guilty of reeling off the coolest tracks when quizzed on our musical tastes, so it’s brilliant to see that as a nation, we’ve still got time for a little cheese in our lives. For those who aren’t quite so forthcoming with their musical tastes, there’s always Spotify’s private session function, so you can listen to power ballads to your heart’s content, without the fear of being judged.”

But then again, it’s music. Everybody has different tastes and we can all listen to what we like, no matter how lame society might think we are.
