A primary two student was among three of the victims who suffered burns from an acid attack at a stall by two assailants at 7.15am on Thursday in Pendang, Alor Setar.
The attack was believed to have been aiming at the stall operator and his wife and the 8-year-old boy is believed to have been at the wrong place at the wrong time, an innocent victim.
Abdul Hakim Wafi Abdul Razak, the 8-year-old victim, a student of Sekolah Rendah Islam, Pendang was rushed to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital after suffering burns on his face, neck and arms.
Stall operator Shamsudin Samat, 60, suffered 17% burns and his wife, Fatimah Shafie, 26, suffered 2% burns on her face, chest and body.
Nazriah Abdul Rahman, 41, the mother of Abdul Hakim, said the incident happened when her son was buying Nasi Lemak for breakfast at the Nasi Lemak stall near Jalan Kebajikan Masyarakat, Pendang.
“I was inside my car at the roadside when I saw two men on a motorcycle stopping in front of the stall and the pillion rider suddenly threw acid on the couple and fled. Unfortunately my son was also a victim of the attack,” she said.
Nazriah claimed that her son suffered 70% burns but Juita Ghazali, the hospital director, later confirmed that the boy suffered 3% burns.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the motive for the attack says DSP Abdul Aziz Ahmad, Pendang district police chief.
