Upfront Arena, an extension of The Bee’s Upfront series, will kick off 2014 with its first act, Foals. Hailing from Oxford, England, the band was formed by long-time friends Yannis Philippakis (guitar) and Jack Bevan (drums), along with Andrew Mears on vocals, guitarist Jimmy Smith, and bassist Walter Gervers.
The quintet aimed to stand out from the other proggier bands in Oxford and began playing at house parties around the area. Their poppy, jittery, upbeat, math rock/post-punk sound soon reached the radar of Transgressive Records, which signed the band on.
Foals then released the singles “Hummer” and “Mathletics”. Their debut album Antidotes was released in 2008, followed by Total Life Forever (2010) and Holy Fire (2013).
