Remember when we first reported about the condom snorting trend? Kids have now moved on to a new snorting trend to prove their ‘coolness’.
Reports say that kids in the United States have taken up a habit of snorting a substance that comes in a sweet, powdery form. It’s not an illegal drug, but just a seemingly harmless piece of candy called Smarties.
Not to be mistaken with the multi-coated chocolate candy that comes in tubes, Smarties in the United States are actually fruit-flavored pieces of candy. According to reports, kids have resorted to crushing this candy, and then snorting and/or smoking the powder.
This trend has been growing so rapidly that a school in Maine has released a note to parents, outlining the dangers of snorting Smarties. One of them includes maggots in your nasal cavity, as the leftover candy powder wedged inside the nose can attract flies to lay their eggs there. Parents were advised to ask their children if they develop a tickling sensation in their noses and if they get a foul, rotting stench from inside their nasal passage. Symptoms of a nasal maggot infestation includes sneezing and a gooey discharge can lead to mucus-like discharge from the patient’s eyelid.
Apart from maggots, snorting Smarties can also lead to infections in the nasal cavity and lungs, and if the candy is not finely crushed, it could act like a razor that cuts through skin or tissue in your nasal cavity.
