Blast From the Past: Malaysian Candies from the Yesteryears

Remember the days when we’d hurry out of school to get dibs on your favorite snacks? You’d push, you’d shove, you’d throw a hissy-fit and sometimes throw a tantrum at the vendor. When things just don’t go the way they’re supposed to, these snacks and the little goodies under its easy-to-rip packaging would fuel our creativity and apparently, sugar high.

After an extensive walk around town, we finally procured these childhood goodies and take a walk down memory lane to finally reminisce those memories of our innocence.

1. Bubblegum
In our early years, our parents would warn us about the dangers of eating bubblegum, but buying 20sen worth of those those bubble-gums, you’d feel like a rebel, chewing on it as you climb up the bus back home. Don’t forget the classic “Black & White Bubblegum” with its blackberry and yogurt flavor.

2. Flavored Jelly Cups
If you couldn’t afford ice-cream during recess, you’d buy yourself a handful of flavored jellies and slurp them as you go by. They were sweet, refreshing, and you can just about eat as many of them without staining your uniform! Were you one of the geniuses to bring these jellies back home and keep it in the freezer too?

3. Apollo Chocolate Cream Wafers
If there’s an award for Best Chocolate Wafer in Town, Apollo Chocolate Cream Wafers would win big. It was only about 10 or 20 sen back in the day, and it’s still just as affordable. The flavor and crisp of the wafer still remains the same as it ever was!

4. Mini Pops
Chupa Chups were way too expensive back in the day when we’d only take a maximum of RM1 to school, but if you were ever craving a lollipop, you know your hands would reach for an orange or strawberry flavored Mini Pop! We rarely ever see these babies nowadays, but just looking at it makes all the hardships in life worth living.

5. Kino’s Ding Dang
Who could ever forget the Doraemon look-alike on the cover! Ding Dang always came with a little bag of chocolate-coated biscuits and  a toy, and that was the one thing we’d throw tantrums at our parents just to get them to buy it for us. A new toy and a snack was enough to keep us quiet back then. Ah, memories!

6. NiNi Choco Dip Sticks
Having a go at NiNi’s dip sticks were always messy. Either the biscuits would break mid-dip, as you’re about to put it in your mouth – we can all agree that it was a messy yet pleasurable affair. Did you save up all your coins to buy it every Friday?

7. Kinos Tora
Another remarkable product by Kinos, Tora had the exact same concept as Ding Dang – a snack that came with a toy. But it was priced a tad more expensive than Ding Dang because it came with a bigger toy. Whether it was a keychain, stationary, or something that’ll keep you occupied all day, Tora was always the first one we’d pick.

8. Chocolate Candies in a Canister
It’s hard to name these things but we remember referring to it as “ubat” or medicine because the canister it came it always looked like the pills we’d see hiding in the medicine cabinet. These candies were much like M&Ms – chocolate in a candy coating, but these were much sweeter.

9. Haw Flakes
These dark pink discs were not really the favorite by many kids, but there were a few of us who’d keep these in our pockets to the after-taste of your meal during recess. Haw flakes are made of the fruit of Chinese hawthorn. They’re sweet, slightly sour and are pretty addictive once you get used to it.

Kino’s Ding Dang, Tora, NiNi Choco Dip Sticks, and Black & White Bubblegum can be purchased in Reminisce Restaurant at Mid Valley Megamall.
