Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) recently raided a restaurant in Cheras that allegedly served exotic meats like tapir’s nose and bear’s foot.
2.95kg of bear flesh, 1.2kg of pangolin scales, 20 bats, three soft turtles, 7.4kg of wild boars and other wild animal’s meat were seized in the kitchen and freezer of the restaurant during a raid.
“We’ve observed the restaurant for two months before making the move because the exotic meat was not served daily. The demand of the dishes is high,” said Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, Perhilitan enforcement director.
Two restaurant workers were arrested for investigations and were granted a bail of RM15,000 each by two different sureties. The case falls under Section 68(1)(b) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 for taking or keeping any part of a totally protected wildlife without a special permit. It can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed up to three years or both.
Abdul Kadir also said that there have been 78 cases involving wild boar meat, 4 involving tapir parts and five involving bats since year 2006. Perhilitan officers also raided four restaurants from Kedah for similar offences.
