3 M’sian Islands on CNN’s World’s Best Beaches List

CNN.com updated its ‘World’s Best Beaches’ list last month, and it now features a hundred different beaches from around the globe in what the news portal deems to be ‘the greatest list of beaches ever produced.’ Malaysia has not only managed to put not one, not two, but three of its beautiful shores on this list: Tanjung Rhu, Tioman Island and Perhentian Kencil. While we’re proud that our country’s islands are being recognized on an international platform, we were surprised by the absence of Sipadan Island, Mataking Island and Rawa Island. However, CNN has also put up a disclaimer of sorts on its list, encouraging readers to comment or vote on its Facebook poll if their favourite beaches are missing from the list.

What makes Tanjung Rhu, Tioman Island and Perhentian Kecil so special? Here are the comments by CNN on why these three Malaysian islands won a spot in their ‘World’s 100 Best Beaches’ list.

Nr. 49 Tanjung Rhu (Langkawi), Malaysia

‘Most tourists on Langkawi flock to Pantai Cenang beach, but the quieter Tanjung Rhu has an earthy beauty and serene atmosphere. The long beach area is surrounded by ancient limestone caves, rippling waterways and dense mangroves.

Highlight: The Four Seasons Resort offers boat tours around the mangrove forests.’ (CNN)

Nr.21 Juara Beach (Tioman Island), Malaysia

‘Less developed and less polished than Thailand, Tioman Island’s Juara Beach brings an all-natural, quiet vibe to the beach experience. This isn’t the place for parties or nightlife, unless you like your parties hushed and your nightlife nonhuman.

Worth knowing: Various travelers report sand flies on the beach.’ (CNN)

Nr.13 Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

‘Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands are to beach bums what Kobe beef is to carnivores; once you’ve experienced it, nothing else quite matches up.

The two main islands are the backpacker-happy Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island), and Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian Island), which has slightly more expensive accommodations.

Highlight: The blue waters off Pulau Perhentian Kecil invariably contain turtles and small sharks.’ (CNN)
