Everyone has been jumping on the ‘nail art’ bandwagon as nails have become a huge fashion statement over the past couple of years. In our article Interesting Nail Trends To Look Out For, we listed down several news (and old) favourite nail trends that are constantly being done at home, and even on the runway. The one that really caught our attention this time around were the textured leather nails. It’s simple with an extra edge.
The leather nails were inspired by the SS13 runway trend for something with texture and a different outlook. This incredibly easy nail polish tutorial shows you just how you can have runway worthy nails at the comfort of your own home!
Things you need :
- base coat
- nail polish colour of choice (we used black!)
- baking soda (or cornstarch)
- a piece of fabric or tissue paper
Firstly, you will need to mix the black nail polish (or again, colour of your choice!) with some baking soda. Make sure you don’t use too much baking soda, it should be half (or less) of the amount of nail polish. Mix it together and ensure there’s no clumping. The baking soda gives more texture to the nail polish and also, makes it less glossy and more matte.
Paint it on like you would do any regular nail polish. One thick layer is more than enough as the consistency of the nail polish mixed with baking soda becomes much thicker. Leave it on to dry for a bit (but not too dry!)
It will end up like the picture above. As you can see, the texture already looks somewhat leather-like. But to further enchance the look, just use a piece of cloth or tissue and blot on your semi-dry nails. Make sure to blot gently as not to spoil the nail polish from setting. The texture will become more obvious and really stand out.
Leave it to dry for about 10 minutes and there you have it! Your own leather textured nails. You can add embellishment and rhinestones to add a more ‘rocker chick’ look or you can just leave it as it is. Do not paint over it with a top coat as that will just cause your nail polish to smoothen out and all your effort goes down the drain.
