STUDY: Blood Groups Linked to Heart Disease

According to an American Heart Association Journal, a study suggests that people from blood groups A,B, and AB are more at risk of heart diseases than those with the more common blood type O. Those with the rarest blood group, AB are the most vulnerable where they are  23% more likely to suffer from heart disease than those with blood group O, with an increase in risk of heart disease by 11% and 5% for blood groups B and A, respectively.

Prof Lu Qi, from the Harvard School of Public health in Boston, said: “While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk of developing heart disease”.

Prof Qi advises that it’s good to know your blood type, the same way you should know your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers.

“Blood type is very complicated, so there could be multiple mechanisms at play”, said Prof Qi. However, it appears that group AB has been linked to inflammation, which plays an important role in artery damage. There is also evidence that blood group A is linked to higher levels of bad cholesterols, and low density lipoprotein, a substance that’s known to clog arteries.

However, instead of worrying about your blood type, we highly recommend getting active with more exercise to promote better heart health and to cut down on your alcohol intake.
