A study of a half a million people across Europe suggests that eating processed meats like ham, bacon and sausages could increase the risk of dying young.

The researches said that salt and chemicals used to preserve the meat may damage health and concluded that diets high in processed meats were linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer and early death.

Prof Sabine Rohrmann from the University of Zurich said, “High meat consumption, especially processed meat, is associated with less healthy  lifestyle. But after adjusting smoking, obesity and other confounders we think there is a risk of eating processed meat”.

“Stopping smoking is more important that cutting meat, but I would recommend people reduce their meat intake”.

In a research conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund, there is scientific evidence that highlights the health risks of eating processed meat. It shows that eating processed meat like bacon, ham, hot dogs, salami and some sausages increases the risk of bowel cancer.

Heart health dietician with the British Heart Foundation, Tracy Parker recommends opting for leaner cuts and using healthier cooking methods such as grilling, and to vary your diet with processed meats with fresh chicken, fish, beans or lentils.
