Israel Officially Bans Skinny Models

Last year, there was already talk about Israel banning the use of models that are ‘too skinny’. Now, in 2013, it has officially been made a rule that models below a certain BMI.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the law prevents designers and advertisers from hiring models with a body-mass index below eighteen and a half. They also require that Israeli publications and advertisers to reveal when they use an ‘altered image of a model’. So in other words, if the model has been photoshopped to look skinny, then the publication or advertisers must state that.

The law was made as a part of a larger international movement to improve the health of models and beauty standards presented to fashion-magazine readers. In fact, CFDA has banned models under 16 and Seventeen magazine has promised to never use Photoshop to alter a girl’s face or body.

Looks like there are going to be several drastic changes happening in the modeling/fashion industry. What do you think about this new law?
