Over 7000 moshpit punters and rock fans head-banged the day away at Rockaway Festival 2012 at Sepang International Circuit recently.
As early as 11.30am, the crowd started pouring and were spoiled with choices of activities and the inclusion of the Everyone Connects by TM Tent, Friends of Red Bull Arena, a merchandise area and a diverse selection of food. The biggest addition to the festival this year was the WKND Sessions Stage, that housed over 500 avid indie music fans throughout the day.
On the main stage, performance began with Malaysia’s favorite rock bands including The Padangs, I, Revival and Massacre Conspiracy who got the crowd rocking! KL’s favorite indie music DJ collective, Twilight Actiongirl played in between all band performances and nailed it with their diverse variety of metal favorites.
The day progressed with stellar performances by Bunkface and punk phenomenon, MxPx All Stars took the stage with an energetic set that enthralled the audience. Indonesian act, Pee Wee Gaskins then took the stage, followed by Gerhana Skacinta’s 10th anniversary show, and Love Me Butch’s tight set before moving onto Unearth’s earth-shattering Malaysian debut. The energetic crowd responded with waves of body surfing and of course, non-stop moshing!
Hujan toned things down with an amazing set which included ‘Ke Selatan’ and ‘Mana Mungkin’ with Joe The Padangs. Malaysia’s legendary Koffin Kanser then took the stage and played the perfect role as the opening band for Soulfly, and also played their renditions of numerous raggae goodies.
The crowd was ready for music mayhem as soon as Soulfly got on stage! Frontman Max Cavalera apologized to the crowd for taking 20 years to get to Malaysia as they opened with their hit ‘World Scum’. Soulfly also played ‘Blood Fire War Hate’ and threw in a few Sepultra classics. Max also surprised the fans when he changed into our Harimau Malaya jersey.
The WKND Sessions Stage catered to indie fans with the likes of Akta Angkasa, Sphere, Guba, Citizens of Ice Cream, Much and more. An additional highlight to Rockaway Festival 2012 was OAG’s return to the music scene, Go Gerila’s amazing showcase, Plainsunset’s, as well as Deer Society’s and Dizkopolis’ exciting DJ set.
