The Craze With Draw Something

The latest craze to sweep across tablets and smart phones all over the world is a simple game most of us would be familiar of as kids: one person draws something, no words allowed and the other participants try to guess what he or she is trying to say. This game of visual charades has resulted in Draw Something by Omgpop, a New York based casual online multiplayer gaming website by Charles Forman and Dan Porter.

With more than 20 million downloads, Draw Something has recently overtaken Zynga’s Words With Friends to become the most popular Facebook Connect game that even the latter has been rumoured to show keen interest to buy over the app at a whopping US$150-250 million.

Indeed, we’ve been seeing Android and iPhone users everywhere engaging in art to the point some are even buying styluses to improve their artwork. Its evident that many of us are regretting not taking our art lessons in school seriously but part of the fun is attempting to guess our friends’ childish scrawls or others’ more Picasso like works.

Omgpop supports an internal currency model of cash and coins. A member can earn coins by logging in regularly, playing a game everyday and earning achievements. You can buy cash via credit card and other methods and convert them into coins, but they cannot be converted back. Omgpop coins earned on the site can be spent at the Omgpop Shop. Items include customization for your profile and gameplay, collectibles, as well as upgrades and power ups for different games.

You can also spend the coins you earn to upgrade your brushes and get more colors for your app. Upon download, what you get are four basic colors: blue, black, red and yellow. There are three levels of difficulty to choose from which you will win 1,2 or 3 coins if your challenger guesses your drawing correctly.

Of course, you can hone your drawing skills and give it your all or you can simply draw and hope your challenger guesses correctly. Overall it is a fun and engaging game for anyone of all ages. However, it can get addictive and time consuming. You have been warned.

Time to get a new stylus, don’t you think?
