Thank God for beauty blenders! Sponges are unquestionably among the most versatile makeup tools in our arsenal. They are absolutely necessary for achieving that flawless, airbrushed finish that we all desire. But – cleaning makeup sponges, like cleaning makeup brushes, can be a bit of a hassle.
When sponges are not in use, they can accumulate a massive amount of bacteria – and even result in mold. The sponge absorbs a lot of product, and because it is placed in water before use, bacteria can grow within it (definitely don’t want that thing on your face… ewww!) To avoid this, it is recommended that you give it a thorough cleaning once a week. There are numerous methods for keeping your sponge clean and germ-free, and we’ve compiled four of them:
1. Soak in Soap Water
The easiest way to clean your sponges is by using soap water. Put warm water in a bowl, add a mild soap or cleanser, and soak your beauty blenders for about 30 minutes. This will ensure that all of the excess makeup product on and in your sponge is removed. After you’ve finished, squeeze out the water from the sponge, run it under running water for a few seconds, and let it air dry completely before using it again.
2. Microwave It
An interesting method that would actually work – if done correctly. Put your dirty makeup sponge in a microwave-safe dish, along with some liquid soap and water. Then, microwave the dish for about one minute. Bring the dish out and allow the water to cool completely before draining and removing the sponge. Finally, before using the makeup sponge, rinse it under running water, wring it out, and allow it to dry completely.
3. Olive Oil and Dishwashing Soap
If you want to clean your makeup sponge in an antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral way, use olive oil and dishwashing detergent. In a bowl, combine equal parts olive oil, dish soap and water. Mix in your used and dirty makeup sponges and set aside for a while. The olive oil in the mixture will help to remove any excess makeup, dirt, and grime from the sponge, while the dish soap will clean the beauty blender thoroughly. Before using it again, rinse it thoroughly and allow it to air dry.
4. Use Cleaning Solution
With the help of a cleaning solution, you can restore the texture of your makeup sponge. This, like other liquids, is an excellent way to keep germs and bacteria at bay on your beauty tool. Using micellar water would do the trick. You can use micellar water to clean your makeup sponges in the same way that you use it to remove makeup from your face. Simply pour the micellar cleansing water onto your dirty makeup blender and run it under running water. Squish the sponge slowly with your fingers to clean it. Makeup residue from the sponge will easily come off, and your sponge will instantly become cleaner.
Apart from cleaning your sponges, there is one important thing to bear in mind. It is a must to replace your sponges after three to four months of regular use. Makeup sponges are delicate and tend to wear and tear over time, so replace them on a regular basis. Also, allow your makeup sponges to air dry before storing them in your makeup bags, as a damp beauty sponge can become a breeding ground for bacteria.
