If you’re a style-lovin’ girl, you would be all too familiar with the hefty price tags that come with every clothing item. While there are plenty of alternatives and shopping platforms that allow you to build up your wardrobe without breaking the bank, there is bound to be a couple of instances whereby you come across something you really like but cannot afford.

We firmly believe that having a sense of style doesn’t mean you have to be able to buy expensive clothes. On the other hand, we cannot deny that looking lavish can give anybody a good boost of self-esteem. If you would like to look a little classier without having to starve for a week for an outfit, here are some style tips you can take note of to make your RM50 outfit look like a million bucks.

1. Fabric

Fabric is literally the most important thing that can make or break your look. Think a strapless satin dress and a suede dress in the exact same cut. The former can come off as a piece of lingerie while the latter looks much more presentable. Go for pieces that are made of cotton, linen and faux suede as they aren’t relatively expensive but can look as if they are worth more than the actual price tag. Avoid materials like rayon, acrylic and polyester as they tend to look cheap.

2. Structure

If you’re going for a look that’s put-together, you’d definitely want to stay away from sloppy-looking or baggy pieces. There isn’t a single silhouette that suits every individual as no two body shapes are identical, but do experiment with the right proportions for a well-balanced look. Find pieces that accentuate your best features and can make you feel the most confident. We guarantee you’ll feel like a million bucks every time. 😉

3. Prints

Many people avoid prints altogether, especially if they are bold as it can be tricky to nail. This doesn’t mean you have to be seen in plain, solid colours only, though! If you’d like to amp up the fun ante, go for classic prints like stripes, gingham, florals and polka dots to jazz up your outfit. Skip prints that are complicated, colour-clashing and can look over the top.

4. Wear the right undergarments

Unless you’re planning to go commando, do pick out the right undergarment for the each outfit you’ll be wearing to avoid unwanted bulges and unsightly lines. A bodycon dress can instantly be ruined by that dreaded VPL (visible panty line), or how wearing a pink bra under a sheer, white top doesn’t scream class whatsoever. Be wary.

5. When in doubt, go for black

There’s a reason why black is always in season and will remain a a classic all year round. Everyone can pull it off and it oozes a sense of class, chicness and edge at the same time. The fact that it is a neutral colour also signifies that it can be matched with anything, thus making it an incredibly worthwhile investment.

6. Avoid wrinkles and crumples

Nothing makes you look sloppier than wearing clothes that aren’t ironed, especially if they tend to crumple easily. If you’ve made the effort to dress well, then your clothes should be worn in their best shape and form, too. Invest in a good steamer to smooth out those wrinkles and cut the ironing time short.

7. Accessorise correctly

It’s all in the details and the last thing you’d want is to alter the whole look by putting on tacky-looking accessories. Coloured and plastic blings are a big no-no altogether, unless that is the look you are going for. Instead, go for intricate and dainty pieces in silver, gold or rose gold that make can make the world of a difference.
