It’s been 50 iconic years since Sir Elton John kickstarted his successful music career and he shocked the world just yesterday as he announced that he would be retiring after a final 300-date world tour which will take him across five continents within the span of three years.
His Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour will start in the U.S. later this year and end some time in 2021, and he has said that he’s not going to be “one of those people” who later decides not to retire after doing a huge world tour. Thankfully, it doesn’t mean that he won’t perform live ever again, but it probably will only be within England.
“I’m not going to be touring and traveling the world. My priorities have changed. I have young children,” he said at New York Gotham Hall. He added, “That doesn’t mean I won’t still be creative.” “But I won’t travel any more…I don’t want to go out with a whimper. I want to go out with a bang…It’ll be the most produced, fantastic show I’ve ever done.”
Simply put, this tour will probably be many of his fans’ last opportunity to see him perform live, so be sure to constantly check his official websites for updates on his tour dates. And if you have no clue, the name of his tour takes cue from his 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
The 70-year-old crooner has sold over 300 million records throughout his career and remains as one of the globe’s most in-demand live performers. In 2017, he played a total of 87 shows, and though we’re really bummed about his retirement, his music will live on forever.
