A cell phone video taken by a member of the audience showed bassist Flea explaining to the crowd that they were “unable to play this evening” because Kiedis, 53, was “on his way to the hospital right now.”
“We are devastated about it, we’re really sad, we love you so much,” Flea said.
“Unfortunately, there’s a medical thing that happened and he needed to deal with it,” Flea said in the short clip.
Kiedis was taken from the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, where the band was supposed to perform, to the hospital. He has been the band’s frontman since it formed in 1983.
Drummer Chad Smith also tweeted on Saturday he was hoping for his bandmate’s “speedy recovery”.
NO one’s more disappointed than us that we couldn’t perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony.
