The seven-month-old panda cub that was born in Zoo Negara on August 18th last year finally has a name – Nuan Nuan!
The name was chosen via a contest and English teacher Oh Teik Peng won a Perodua MyVi for having his idea – Nuan Nuan – selected. It means warm in Mandarin, and his entry beat 22,830 others.
Oh told reporters, “When the baby was born, I looked at photos of it online. It’s very cute, very adorable, very charming. When I entered the competition, I focused on the characteristics of a panda, which is famous for being friendly.”
“That was what inspired me to come up with the name,” he said.
Both Malaysia and China picked it as their top choice for the female cub. Nuan Nuan will be returned to China after a year, but her parents Xing Xing and Liang Liang will be here for another eight years.
Nuan Nuan is the first panda to be born in captivity outside of China.
