The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has found a way to nab private car owners offering Uber private taxi services via the Uber app itself.
Those car owners whose vehicles have been identified by the SPAD may not be able to renew their road tax. After the authorities identify the vehicles, they will send out a notice to the car owners for an interrogation.
The notice under Section 225 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 requires car owners or drivers to assist in investigations of the alleged offence under Section 16 of the Act. They are also required to bring along their cars for inspection. If caught violating the act, the cars may be seized or confiscated.
If the owner ignores the notice or fails to bring the said car for the inspection, a government source mentioned that SPAD will utilise other available channels to locate the cars.
As much as we love Uber, do let your loved ones know this for them to be wary, whether they’d be drivers or riders.
