[WRITER’S PICKS] Quintessential Tips On Managing Curly or Wavy Hair

As a curly-haired girl who’s had to combat the frustrating battle of frizz my whole life, I’ve definitely picked up a few pointers over the years. Whether it’s in the damp winters in Northern California or the sticky humidity in Malaysia, my curls and waves always seemed to find a new way to bring me a headache. Even spending an hour flat-ironing my hair seems worth it, rather than to go out looking like a fuzz-ball. If you can relate, fear not! Once you learn how to use the right products and techniques, you’ll love your unique hair and will be able to rock it no matter where you are. These tips work with naturally curly hair and permed hair as well:

1. Leave-In conditioner is your best friend

Whether it is a windy day or insane humidity, a sure-fire way to tame your mane is a spritz of this magic concoction. After you wash your hair, massage a small amount of the product into your tresses and let it dry. You can add some to dry hair too if you encounter some midday frizz. Just avoid your roots so you don’t get a flat, greasy look.

2. Brush your hair only when it’s wet

If I learned anything from a childhood of my mom brushing my hair every morning to tame my locks, it is that any hope of showing off defined curls goes out the window. Brushing dry curly or wavy hair ruins its natural texture, and sometimes, it just gives you an unflattering amount of poofiness. Instead, brush those tangles out with a large paddle brush or wide-tooth comb while you’re in the shower, then either air dry your hair or use a diffuser on your hairdryer. You’ll have a lot more defined texture and less frizz this way.

3. Don’t be afraid of oils

While many straight-haired dames complain of greasy hair, girls with curly or wavy hair usually struggle with constant dryness. Luckily, there are plenty of nourishing oils you can use to help supplement your lovely locks. Coconut oil is definitely a favourite, as it can keep your hair feeling soft all day without being too heavy, and it naturally smells good. Argan, almond, and jojoba oil are also popular alternatives. Experiment with different types and see what works best for you. Add around half a teaspoon (a little goes a long way) onto damp hair, focusing on the ends.

4. Don’t shampoo everyday

As I’ve mentioned, us curly-tops usually have drier hair than other ladies, and constant shampooing just strips the natural oils you have. Try sticking to just conditioner on most days when you do wash your hair, and use shampoo maybe once or twice a week. Since I started doing this, my hair has felt much softer, and I haven’t experienced any greasiness or product buildup. Another tip is to also leave your conditioner on a bit longer, so it can moisturise your hair as deeply as possible.

Embrace your unique hair texture, and flaunt those waves and curls, ladies!
