What used to be a cultural ornament for Indian women is now a popular accessory for modern women all around the world. Toe rings draw attention to your feet when you’re barefoot as you take a walk down the beach or in bare footwear such as thongs and sandals.
In Indian culture, Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine which believes that our bodies have prana which means soul, vital energy or life force (the Chinese know this as Chi) and it runs through our body through different channels right to our toes. The toe ring keeps the reproductive system of the body in good health which is why only married women wear it right next to their big toe to keep this force healthy.
The toe ring or jodvi is one of the 16 adornments an Indian bride receives on her wedding day. The toe ring is put on by the groom on his bride’s feet and is worn on both her left and right foot as a pair.
Also if you notice, most toe rings are silver because gold is a better heat conductor and would cause the energy to dissipate from the body. Also, gold is known as the metal of the Gods and associated to royalty so it should never be worn below the waist. Widows will remove the toe rings, hence they are known as a symbol of married women.
Though toe rings are generally worn by many women these days, Indian women who are single continue to avoid wearing them before marriage so as to not confuse the men. Everything in life has meaning, for example, the reason why we wear our wedding bands on the fourth finger is because it contains a vein that goes straight to the heart. Of course, you can wear toe rings without worry on any toe you like according to your comfort. There are tons of designs and metals to choose from these days and they admittedly make very cute accessories for your feet!
