As a model who has been categorized as being ‘plus sized’, Ashley Graham decided to give an enlightening talk on the use of labels in the fashion industry. In her talk she begins by looking in the mirror, and praising herself as brilliant, beautiful, bold, among many other things. “Rolls, curves, cellulite…I love ever part of me.” She tells the audience. The 27 year old beauty takes time to acknowledge her perceived “flaws”, saying: “Back fat? I see you popping over my bra today, but that’s alright I’m going to choose to love you. And thick thighs? You are just so sexy you can’t stop rubbing each other. That’s alright. I’m going to keep you.”
People in the industry have told her that she would never be in magazines, much less the cover of one, but she has proven her critics wrong by appearing in 5 magazine covers in the past year. She has also been one of the first plus sized models to have ever appeared in Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. It is her hope that her appearance in these campaigns will help other women accept their bodies as beautiful no matter what the size.
