Froya 3

Hailing from the East, local songbird Froya, is known for her unique style of music which comprises of a blend of genres ranging from folk to electronica. Having entered the local indie music scene in late December 2011, Froya’s music can best be described as quirky with a hint of indie pop.

This year, Froya will be launching her debut album “Panic Bird” during the “Guinness Amplify: Curates” show.

In conjunction with Guinness Amplify: Curates – an extension of the highly successful Guinness Amplify Music Made of More, we recently sat down with Froya for a quick chat.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in KK, Sabah and moved to KL to pursue music when I was 19. Songwriting and music production have always been the only thing that fascinates me to continue growing as a musician; or a drive for a life-long passion. Currently, I’m a full time jingles composer for TV commercials by day and Froya by night. Froya (stage name) is a platform I created to allow me to write anything. A place where I can have my own creative freedom to write anything instead of tailoring it based on the needs of a client.

How did this collaboration with Guinness Amplify come about?

Last year, I was lucky enough to perform two shows for Guinness Amplify and when they heard that I have an album launch this year, they contacted me on a collaboration under Guinness Amplify: Curates. I also wanted to thank Future Sound Asia/Future Artists Agency (angels in disguise) for making all this possible!

What do you think of the music scene in KL of late?

It’s definitely growing and more encouraging than what we had, say 5 to 10 years ago. You can see more original materials pumping out frequently online or at any live gigs nowadays. I think music is a two-way communication between musicians doing our parts and the support or response from the people around us. Whether it’s in the form of monetary, platform, exposures, media and even welcoming appreciation from the audience, it can encourage so much possibility for the whole industry.

What inspires you and your music?

Lyrically mainly life events and secret thoughts that I would never said in public. Musically, I could be inspired by any sound, rhythm or event that triggers my imagination. Later picturing how the whole arrangement and instruments would orchestrate together to form a song.

Name two types of food that you can’t live without.

Perfect sunny side-up eggs and Japanese food.

What do you love most about what you do?

I’ve always adored creative work since I was little. Nothing excites me more than being able to recreate the ideas and thoughts in your head, carving and shaping them bit by bit into a real life masterpiece that you can call your own.

Tell us something that most of your fans don’t know.

I’m not a singer but a songwriter.

Any advice for aspiring musicians out there?

Persevere, persevere and persevere!

What’s next for Froya?

Apart from gigging and promoting the “Panic Bird” album for the next half year or so, I’m really excited to move on to the next project and writing new materials.
