If your manicurist is still soaking your nails in water during your mani, it may be time to ask her to stop. Here’s why:
Deborah Lippmann, a celebrity manicurist and founder of a popular nail care line claims that soaking the nails expands the nail plate, ultimately ruining the polish application.
Many manicurists rely on water to soften the cuticles and dead skin around the nails, so that it’s easier to buff and clean up the nail beds.
Lippmann says if the nails are soaked, it is important to wait until they are completely dry before putting on any nail polish. The nails will return to their original size and state.
A well-executed manicure should last at least one week before you start noticing chipping or fading. Any sooner might be the result of applying nail polish before giving them a chance to fully dry.
Scraping and buffing the nail beds away after they soak might also create an uneven surface, which can cause the nails to break or peel easily and the nail polish to bubble.
So, the next time your manicurist asks you to soak your nails, refuse politely to skip that step.
