Facebook has inevitably changed the way we communicate, the way we form friendships and continue to connect, and in some strange way, it documents our lives from day to day through little status updates and photos we upload. Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Timeline at the F8 keynote.
If you look at your profile page, most of what you see displayed are a tiny portion of your recent activities which may or may not reflect who you truly are especially to someone new who just added you. Not everyone will go on stalker mode and try to go back to all your older posts to see what you’ve done or achieved in life. Here’s where Timeline comes in. Timeline puts together all of the media which you custom select into a single page.
There are three main components- a user’s stories, apps and a new way to express a user’s identity. Your images and videos will be prominently featured making it more visually focused and you sort your information by date, type of media and location. The great part about Timeline is that your ‘older posts’ don’t go hidden but remain on the page even as you add new content to it. If there are some important parts of your story are not on your timeline, you can go back to when they happened and add them.
So what’s so different about Timeline and your Profile page? For one, it’s more visual with a giant photo at the top that represents the cover of your ‘book’. As you scroll down past your cover, you’ll see your posts, photos and life events as they happened in time. You choose what’s featured on your timeline. You can star your favorites to double their size or hide things altogether.
Another interesting part is the social app which lets you share with others the things you like to do on your timeline- the music you listen, sports you play, movies you watch and even the recipes you attempt to cook! You’ll also be able to view the interests of others and try out what they’ve done.
After all is said and done, fifty years from now when you can look back on your life through Facebook and reminisce the good times and bad with your grandkids, all on a single page.
