There is something about living abroad as a kid. It introduces you to a whole new world that is scary but will eventually become the best thing that ever happens to you. I had the opportunity of a lifetime when my parents broke the news that we would be leaving home to live in a country that’s completely foreign to me – South Africa.
I thought I would hate everything about moving to a new country but it turns out that I would be very wrong because Durban was a city so beautiful and vibrant that I immediately fell in love with it. No other city has ever compared since and I doubt that none ever will. There is so much about this place that will make you remember it for the rest of your life. So, if you ever have the chance to visit that part of the world, make sure to make a pit stop at Durban. Here are some of the more-than-good-enough reasons for you to visit:
Their food is incredibly delicious
Malaysians love to eat and we most definitely love good food. When we travel to a beautiful place that has great food, that means we have found paradise. Chances are we will come back for more. The food in South Africa is absolutely superb. There’s a wide variety of meat to choose from. If you’re not convinced, you might want to check out a local restaurant that serves the best South African cuisine in town.
The weather is beautiful
Much like Australia, Durban’s winter is in June and its summer is in December. While the summertime can get pretty hot and not the kind of heat that we are used to here in Malaysia, the city is bustling with activities for you to get into. Don’t get me started on their winter. The weather is pretty much perfect then!
There are game reserves
There is no better way than to look at majestic animals than by visiting a game reserve. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, a game reserve is an area of land that’s been set aside for the conservation of wild animals, also commonly known as safaris. Sure, zoos can be educational and fun but nothing will embed your mind like seeing a majestic lion out in the open wild. It’s an experience you have to go through and one you will never forget.
They have colourful flea markets
One of the many, many things I miss about Durban would be the flea markets. At the flea markets you can get some of the best food, African bead-jewellery, and even spices. Basically anything you can think of for a damn good price too. If you’re visiting Durban, the flea markets are the best place to buy souvenirs for friends and family back home.
There’s plenty of culture to get into
Even though it’s a thriving metropolis with plenty of modern things to do, Durban has not forgotten its roots. There are plenty of Zulu villages that provide dance shows and takes you into a world of Zulu culture. The experience will be so authentic, you almost feel like you’re travelling back into time and to another place entirely.
